What real IRD messages look like

  • Official emails end in @ird.govt.nz, myir.ird.govt.nz, or ironline.ird.govt.nz
  • IRD does not include links to login pages in emails
  • Official SMS messages only come from numbers 5678 or 4478 and do not contain links
  • IRD will never ask for your password or financial details by email/text

Common spoof patterns

  • "You are due a tax refund" emails with a link to a fake myIR login
  • "Action required: Update your payment details" text messages
  • Spoofed emails from ird.co.nz or ird.com.nz (lookalike domains)
