What we look after
IT support
Day-to-day help for your people when something stops working. Your staff get one number to call and a local engineer who already knows your setup. We handle the everyday problems: a PC that won't start, a printer that has dropped off the network, an account that has locked itself out. We also handle the bigger questions about where your IT should go next. Support is delivered remotely and onsite across Dunedin.
Network support
Switches, routers, firewalls and the cabling that ties them together. Slow internet or slow computers can be a network problem in disguise. Installing good quality, reliable networking equipment is a good first step to ensuring your organisation runs smoothly. We design, install and manage business networks, covering switching, routing, firewalls, VLANs, and remote access. We also monitor your network for faults, failing hardware, and configuration drift so issues don't turn into an outage.
Wi-Fi
Coverage that holds up across an office, a warehouse or a school. Wi-Fi problems are rarely fixed by another cheap access point. We survey the site, design coverage for the way the building is actually used, separate staff and guest traffic, and manage the controller so roaming, capacity and interference are handled quickly.
Microsoft 365
Licensing, migration, security and ongoing tenant care. We are a Microsoft Certified Partner. We right-size licensing so you are not paying for seats and features you never use, migrate email and files without drama, harden the tenant with MFA and Conditional Access, and look after it from there, including Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive.
Google Workspace
Gmail, Drive, Classroom and Chromebooks, administered properly. Plenty of Otago organisations run on Google rather than Microsoft, and schools especially so. We are a Google Cloud Partner, and we set up and manage Google Workspace end to end: user and group administration, shared drives, security settings and two-step verification, Chromebook and Classroom management, and migrations either into Workspace or across to Microsoft 365 if that is the better fit. If you run both, we will keep them working together rather than against each other.
Cyber security
Layered protection, and evidence you can hand to an insurer. We are CyberCert Bronze certified and independently audited. Work covers endpoint protection, email filtering, MFA, patching, access control, staff awareness and incident response, plus the documented evidence insurers and auditors ask for. We also publish The Local Vocal, a free feed of the phishing and scam campaigns currently hitting New Zealand inboxes.
Computers and devices
Procurement, setup, management and replacement planning. We specify and supply business-grade laptops, desktops and mobile devices, deploy them with a standard build so every machine is consistent, enrol them for management, and keep a replacement plan so hardware is refreshed on a schedule rather than in a panic.
Servers
On-premise, hybrid and cloud, sized for what you actually need. Whether your line-of-business application demands a server in the comms room or you are ready to move workloads to Azure, we design, build, patch and monitor it. That includes virtualisation, storage, licensing and the unglamorous maintenance that keeps a server healthy for years.
Backups
Backed up is not the same as recoverable. We run layered backups across servers, endpoints and Microsoft 365, and we test restores, because an untested backup is a hope, not a plan. Retention is set to match how far back you would realistically need to reach, and we can show you what a recovery actually looks like before you need it.
Proactive monitoring
Finding faults before your staff do. Servers, network gear, backups, disk health, security agents and patch status are all monitored continuously. Many faults that we fix you may never notice: a failing drive, a backup that silently stopped, a switch running hot. That is the entire point of proactive management.
Onsite support
Engineers who can be at your door in Dunedin. Some jobs need hands on hardware: a comms-room rebuild, a cabling fault, a new site fit-out, a staff member who needs someone beside them. Because our team is based in Dunedin, onsite attendance across the city and wider Otago is part of normal service, not an exception.
Managed IT
One subscription covering the lot, with no bill-shock. Universal Support is our fully managed subscription: proactive monitoring, patching, security, backups, vendor liaison, strategic advice and unlimited support under one predictable monthly fee. It exists so you stop paying by the hour to fix problems that shouldn't have happened.
Why a Dunedin business should use a Dunedin provider
- Our engineers are in Dunedin, so someone can physically attend when a job needs hands on hardware.
- We work in the same timezone and the same business hours as you, with no offshore handover.
- We know the local context: the buildings, the internet options, the other suppliers you deal with.
- We have been here since 2001, and most of our work still comes from referrals in the region.
Questions people ask us
Who provides business IT support in Dunedin?
Decision1 IT Solutions provides business IT support in Dunedin. We are based at 1 Bath Street, Dunedin Central, Dunedin 9016, have operated locally since 2001, and support small and medium businesses, schools and not-for-profits across Otago and Southland. Phone 03 471 8232.
What does a managed IT provider actually do?
A managed IT provider takes ongoing responsibility for your technology rather than waiting for it to break. In practice that means monitoring your servers, network and backups continuously, applying security patches, managing Microsoft 365 and user accounts, providing a help desk for your staff, and advising on what to replace or improve next, usually for a fixed monthly fee.
Do you support Microsoft 365?
Yes. Decision1 is a Microsoft Certified Partner and Microsoft 365 is core to what we do: licence right-sizing, tenant setup and migration, MFA and Conditional Access, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive, Microsoft 365 backup, and ongoing tenant management.
Can you help with cyber security and cyber insurance requirements?
Yes. Decision1 is CyberCert Bronze certified and independently audited. We implement the controls insurers and auditors look for: MFA, endpoint protection, email filtering, patching, access control, tested backups and staff awareness. We then document the evidence so you can complete an insurance questionnaire honestly. We also publish free self-check tools, including a cyber insurance readiness assessment.
Do you come onsite, or is support remote only?
Both. Most issues are resolved remotely because it is faster, but our team is based in Dunedin, so onsite attendance across the city and wider Otago is a normal part of service, including comms-room work, cabling, new site fit-outs and hands-on help for staff.
What size businesses do you work with?
Small and medium businesses. Our clients are typically Otago organisations with somewhere between a handful and a couple of hundred staff, including professional services firms, automotive and food production businesses, healthcare practices, hospitality operators and schools.
How much does managed IT support cost in New Zealand?
Managed IT in New Zealand is usually priced per user or per device, per month, with the rate depending on how much is included: monitoring and patching only, versus a fully managed service covering security, backups and unlimited support. Decision1 quotes a fixed monthly subscription after looking at your environment, so there are no hourly surprises. Contact us for a figure specific to your setup.
Do you only work in Dunedin?
Dunedin is our home and where our team is based, and we serve the wider Otago region including Central Otago and Southland. Through our membership of the IT Alliance we also support clients with sites elsewhere in New Zealand.
We already have an IT provider. Can you review what we have?
Yes. We are regularly asked to give a second opinion on an existing setup: backups that have never been restore-tested, Microsoft 365 licensing that has drifted, security gaps that would fail an insurance questionnaire. We also publish free browser-based tools so you can run some of those checks yourself before talking to anyone.
How long has Decision1 been in business?
Since 2001. Decision1 IT Solutions has supported Dunedin and Otago businesses for more than two decades, with a team that lives and works locally.
